RESUMO:

Assessment can be part of the teaching-learning process, and can contribute to the improvement of didactic tools and adjustments in the program content or even in the curricular structure, especially when it is formative.

The aim of this study is to describe the implementation of a trainee’s performance assessment tool in the Medical Residency Program of Digestive Endoscopy (PRMED) using the DOPS instrument (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills), and to develop preceptor's qualification in performing evaluation of the endoscopic skills. Moreover we analyzed the trainees and preceptor’s meaning and perception of this process.

This is a qualitative, prospective, exploratory and interpretive research, carried out from November 2016 to February 2018, in the Onofre Lopes University Hospital Encoscopic Unit. The study population was the Gastroenterology and Digestive System Surgery’s trainees, who underwent their training during the study period and who accepted to participate in it. The residency program consists of one year of high and low endoscopy training in the third year of residency in Gastroenterology or Digestive System Surgery.

This study comprised three stages: The first step, involved the execution of an assessment training preceptors course. DOPS tool was chosen because it allows access to the three main aspects of competence, knowledge, technical skills and attitudes, being elaborated during the course by the program's own preceptors. The second one was the DOPS tool implantation in the workplace. The researcher collected data through his observation and impressions. The assessments were archived in individual folders for each trainee, which could have free access to these and at any time. The last step, accomplished after a year of use of the instrument in the service, and consisted of semi-structured interviews with trainees and preceptors in order to understand how the process was understood by them. Data analysis was performed through content analysis, with the categorization of subjects by frequency and implicit relevance.

Thus, the study purposes were achieved by incorporating DOPS into the workplace routine of our service, by enabling the preceptors to use it and recognition of its importance for preceptors and trainees.
