RESUMO:

The national health policy for persons with disabilities demands full attention to these people, which implies direct assistance to the specificities of their disability, as well as assistance to problems shared by any individual. Moreover, it guides health promotion activities, prevention of disabilities, improvement of information mechanisms, human resources training and the organization of healthcare services. However, persons with disabilities do not feel taken care of when they seek such services. Furthermore, medical training, in general, has not contemplated this group in curricular content, which contributes to the lack of recognition of specificities related to the various kinds of disabilities and to relevant aspects of integral care. This study aims to understand the perception of persons with disabilities of medical care, in order to contribute to a comprehensive professional training that answers to their healthcare needs. The theoretical and methodological path chosen was the phenomenology, using a qualitative approach. The techniques used for data collection were focal groups and semi-structured interviews, from which three thematical unities emerged: the needs of persons with disabilities; health-care services aimed for the persons with disabilities and comprehensive attention to health-care of persons with disabilities. Results proved that the persons with disabilities face many barriers when seeking medical care, in regard to behavioral aspects, accessibility, and lack of appropriate material needed for medical care. What was also observed was the necessity to sensitize and capacitate healthcare personnel to receive and care for persons with disabilities and that accessibility in healthcare brings benefits to them, making them feel socially included and respected in their condition. The important role of attention in healthcare to persons with disabilities is underlined, which constitutes a challenge and demands critical thinking about current practices and future possibilities. It is concluded that it is necessary for medical schools to commit to the theme and allow for an education aimed at these persons’ health needs.
