THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SKILLS OF OPHTHALMOLOGY IN A CURRICULUM OF GRADUATION IN MEDICINE BASED ON ACTIVE METHODS OF TEACHING LEARNING

RESUMO:

INTRODUCTION: The Multicampi School of Medical Sciences (EMCM) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN has its curriculum oriented by competences and developed in active learning teaching methodologies, based on Problem Based Learning (PBL). The teaching of ophthalmology, in order to attend the DCNs, is still a challenge for medical schools in Brazil which motivated the design of this study. Objectives: To report the process of implementation of the competences related to the area of ophthalmology in the medical course of EMCM. METHODOLOGY: From the pedagogical planning meetings of curricular components, developed in the Modules format, the insertion of essential competences of ophthalmology began to be delineated, from the first periods of the course. Based on the learning objectives, the activities were inserted in the 3 axes of the course (Tutorial, Skills, Community). RESULTS / DISCUSSION: The activities related to ophthalmology were developed in the following Modules and respective periods of the course: Birth, Growth and Development and Perception, Consciousness and Emotion (III period); Fever and Inflammation (IV period); Women's Health (V period) and in the Optional Module in Ophthalmology (after the third period). In the perspective of the development of the Aging and Health, Environment and Health Modules and Emergencies foreseen for the seventh and eighth periods, respectively, other ophthalmology competences, not yet contemplated are being planned, under the aspects of knowledge, skills and attitudes involving themes such as “eye red" and cataract. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: In this way, understanding the curriculum as a dynamic process, the study allows to visualize the teaching of ophthalmology in this innovative curricular model, as well as stimulates the reflection about a reinforcement of the positive points and reassessment of the negatives, aiming to improve the teaching / learning area of ophthalmology for the general practitioner.
