INTRODUCTION: Evaluations in health teaching, when aimed at the surgical technique, are
usually done live by the master surgeon, a process that can be biased and subjective.
OBJECTIVE: To establish and analyze the evaluation instrument of operative competencies
of medical students and residents in the surgicenter of a university hospital.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with graduating and residents during
gynecological surgeries, using the OPRs (Operative Performance Rating System). The latter is
based on the evaluation of technical abilities, composed of the Likert Scale of 5, In the
questions: Knowledge of Anatomy; Handling of Surgical Instruments; Flow of Surgery;
Interaction with the team, with this score varying from 4 to 20. The results were stored in an
Excel / Office 2010 spreadsheet. For data analysis, the student's t test was used to compare
the averages. RESULTS: The mean age and the average score of the students: In the tenth
period were respectively 22 years and 6.4 points (p <0.0)); Eleventh period: 24 years and 8.4
points (p <0.0001); The first-year resident: 26 years and 11.4 points (p = 0.7499); The
second-year resident: 27 years and 15.7 points (p <0.0001); The third-year resident: 29 years
and 17.2 points (p <0.0001); The fourth-year resident: 30 years, 16.4 points, (p = 0.0110).
CONCLUSIONS: The application of OPRS in the surgicenter is feasible and allows to
discriminate the different levels of training between residents and undergraduates,
providing immediate feedback on the operative skills performance, allowing to follow the
individual progress of each student, according to your level of education.
