SUMMARY:

In the present research, the main objective is to identify peculiar traits existing in the performance of drummer Luizinho Duarte performing on the drums the musical genres Frevo and Baião. The methodology took place, at first, through the realization of a state of knowledge expanded from a survey of academic works published in Brazil. After this literature review, we started to select and analyze the works. Auditions, transcriptions and analyzes were carried out to identify the peculiar nuances in the performance of the frevo and baião rhythms performed by the drummer. Among the results, specific modes of execution and accompanying patterns for these genres were cataloged, as well as the creation of exercises based on the way Luizinho Duarte executes the instrument. In this sense, we believe that this work aims to corroborate the history of the drum in Brazil as well as to propose practical and interpretive reflections based on the details of the execution of part of the northeastern rhythms with a focus on the nuances of the musical language.
