The academic course helped me to see that school spaces are not the only areas that provide music education (ARROYO, 2000), and in the spaces outside schools (SOUZA, 2001) can be discovered many musical worlds (FINNEGAN, 1989 apud ARROYO, 2002) and these make us realize a rich variety of teaching-learning relationships without the mandatory presence of the teacher in this process (QUEIROZ, 2004), since, according Petitat (2011. p. 365) “education derives from the insertion in relationships - sometimes school, but most of the time not school”. The Shalom Catholic Community is not intended to promote learning music, but the close relationship that its members have with music is undeniable. It is present in daily life and activities that the Community carries out, whether in the Mass, the group meetings, in meetings or large events, medium or small, where music has varied functions and have different uses (MERRIAM, 1964) , now aggregator, sometimes reinforcing the message communicated, either as a means to facilitate the relationship and the faithful dialogue with God. This work aims to elucidate the musical world of Shalom Community in Natal-RN mission, seeking to find the various uses and functions of music, as well as identify possible teaching-learning relationships in this extraescolar environment. To achieve this goal, we make use of "thick description" (GEERTZ, 1926) as a methodological tool of anthropology and ethnography. The ethnography of music is writing about the ways that people make music (SEEGER, 2008). To seek various relationships of music in different dimensions of the same field, research is developed through participant observation, making use also of interviews and questionnaires, and literature review.
