RESUMO:

Objectives: To compare the long-term variation of indicators of nutritional status and food consumption among workers in industries adherent to and non-adherent to the Workers’ Food Program (WFP).

Methods: Prospective longitudinal comparative study of workers in manufacturing industries adherent and non-adherent to the WFP, by probability sampling, stratified and multistage, observed in two time points with an interval of 4 years. We evaluated body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and food consumption at lunch and daily total by the 24 hour recall method. For statistical analysis we used the GEE model adjusted by demographic variables, physical activity level and sedentary time. The study was approved by a Research Ethics Committee and all participants gave written informed consent.

Results: A total of 1069 workers from 26 industries of the Rio Grande do Norte State in Brazil, were included and four year later 273 of these workers from 16 industries were reassessed. The mean age was 37 ± 10 years and 53.1% were male. The groups did not differ in age and sex distribution. BMI increased in both groups (0.43 kg/m2 in the non-WFP group, p = 0.004, and 0.54 kg/m2 in the WFP group, p = 0.001) and WC increased in the WFP group (0.46 cm in the non-WFP group, p = 0.37 and 0.63 cm in the WFP group, p = 0.017). Comparisons of BMI and WC variation did not show statistical differences between groups (p = 0.78 and p = 0.33, respectively). The PAT group had a higher increase in daily protein intake (p = 0.03).

Conclusion: BMI and the WC increased over time in workers of industries adherent to the WFP in a similar way to the increase observed in workers from non-adherent industries. In order to achieve the objectives of the WFP, there will be a need for periodic evaluation and monitoring of nutritional indicators in these workers and implementation of monitoring and enforcement actions of the WFP.
