SUMMARY:

This thesis focuses on the book organized by Maria Bethânia, "Caderno de Poesias" (2015). The fragmented work presents sixty-five texts that together create the image of an idealized Brazil envisioned by the curator. The focus of this research is on the analysis of the selection made by Bethânia and how its configuration contributes to the creation of a Brazilian entity, a term borrowed from author Mário de Andrade that denotes a non-homogenization of the formative aspects of our country. Brazil in Bethânia's work is understood through the literary, historical, and cultural processes that shape Brazilian society. Therefore, our aim is to interpret how each literary text represents a national image and can be key to understanding a heterogeneous and constantly changing country. Specifically, it aims to: a) analyze the texts in "Caderno de Poesias" from a literary critical perspective — in order to discuss the authors' aesthetics, themes, social representations, as well as historical-literary aspects; and b) construct, through the texts that make up the work, the image of a multifaceted Brazil that dialogues within traditions. For this purpose, bibliographic research and literary analysis were carried out based on the assumptions of Antonio Candido's integrative criticism (2006), Luís da Câmara Cascudo's studies (2001) — especially because the author permeates between literary and social tradition — and Leyla Perrone-Moisés' critical perspective in her book "Vira e mexe nacionalismo: paradoxos do nacionalismo literário" (2007), where the author investigates in detail fundamental issues of contemporary criticism, such as the conception of "culture" and the contrasts colonialism/nationalism, identity/alterity. Several authors will serve as a basis for the individual analysis of the texts in the examined book, such as: Armstrong (2005), Barthes (1988), Bertrand Westphal (2011), among others.
