SUMMARY:

This research investigates the constructions of melancholy in literary works by Raduan Nassar (1935- ). Initially, we delve into the writer and his literary production, raising questions which serve as guides for the development of the research, with a detailed explanation of the narratives. Next, we establish the connections between the theoretical framework of our analytical category - melancholy - in some literary works to verify the central hypothesis of our research. This hypothesis is based on the possibility that the works comprising the research corpus, namely : "Lavoura Arcaica" (1975), "Um copo de Cólera" (1992), and "Menina a caminho" (1997), share the common ground of the aesthetic work of melancholy, representing a productive path for expanding understandings around these texts. In order to better explore the social and structural elements that shape Nassar's work, we turn, especially, to Candido (2014) as a means to adopt a literary analysis aimed at converging the aesthetic with the social, presenting verifiable interpretations. Regarding the narrative genres which constitute the corpus, we mainly refer to Bakhtin (2004) on the novel, Evrard (1997) on the novella, and Cortázar (2008) on the short story. Concerning melancholy and its relationship with literature, notable contributions are made by Lima (2016), Freud (2013), Kehl (2009), Scliar (2003), Lages (2007), and others.
