SUMMARY:

This research, grounded in the theoretical-methodological framework of variationist sociolinguistics, analyzes the phenomenon of discourse variation between the conjunctional periphrases SÓ QUE and SENDO QUE. For this purpose, 500 tokens of each periphrasis were extracted from Corpus do Português. To promote a variationist study, five semantic-pragmatic functions proposed by Longhin (2003) were considered: differentiation marking, marking of dissatisfaction with conditions, marking of unexpected or undesirable events, marking of refutation, and marking of counter-argumentation. These functions are subordinated to the macro function opposition by counter-expectation. The following factor groups were quantitatively controlled: semantic-pragmatic functions; discursive genres: news and report; position of periphrasis: beginning of period and beginning of clause; discourse type: authorial and quotation; and subject: football, celebrity, politics, security, economy, entertainment, sport, health, etc. After categorizing the variants according to the factor groups, statistical rounds were conducted in the GoldVarb X program. In this qualifying examination, the results for semantic-pragmatic functions were analyzed. The hypothesis was confirmed: the periphrasis SÓ QUE was favored in the marking of differentiation, the marking of dissatisfaction with conditions, the marking of unexpected or undesirable events. In contrast, the competing form, SENDO QUE, was favored in the marking of refutation and the marking of counter-argumentation.
