SUMMARY:

This dissertation deals with the theme of iconicity, comparing stable sign languages and emerging sign languages. The scientific relevance of comparing the two types of sign languages above is that the former have already developed lexicons, with countless generations of speakers, are institutionalized and relatively stable, while the latter are new languages, with few generations of speakers, spoken in towns and villages, where the lexicon can be observed at the time of its emergence. Considering that the basic literature on iconicity in sign languages assumes that given the visual modality in which these languages are realized, the lexicon is created with high iconic power and that

arbitrarization and phonological reduction are a consequence of time, if this hypothesis is correct, It is expected that the iconicity of the lexicon of emerging sign languages will be perceived by deaf users of other sign languages. To test this assumption, we developed an experiment based on the experiment by Occhino (2017) in which deaf users of Libras would have to assign scores from 0 to 100 for the iconicity of 20 signs and their own language, Libras, in 20 signs of a language of stable foreign sign language, the Catalan sign language and in 20 signs of an emerging Brazilian sign language spoken in the interior of Piauí, the scene. The partial results favor the findings of Occhino (2017), whose results demonstrate that deaf people always judge their L1 as more iconic and disfavor the literature's premise that the lexicon of sign languages appears more iconic, since deaf users of Libras judge the iconicity of languages in the following descending order of notes pounds>cena>Catalan sign language. The scientific contributions to the more general study of how the lexicon arises in

languages will be highlighted in the data analysis.
