SUMMARY:

This dissertation proposes a linguistic analysis of the Gospel according to Matthew, focusing on the intertextuality between its fragments and the Old Testament. Although the Bible is a multifaceted work, this research centers on investigating the argumentative phenomena present in this relationship, considering Jean-Michel Adam's Theory of Textual Discourse Analysis (2011, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022). In addition to Textual Discourse Analysis, the study incorporates enunciative theories, such as Rabatel's enunciative instances (2016, 2021) and Maingueneau's concept of Constituent Discourses (2000, 2004, 2021), as well as Koch's notion of intertextuality (2012). The study is justified by the rich opportunity to explore the layers of meaning in the text of the Gospel of Matthew and its relationship with the Old Testament. The dissertation aims to understand whether intertextuality was intentionally incorporated to persuade the audience of that time, considering the sacred status of the Old Testament writings for the Jews. The adopted methodology includes textual and discourse analysis, exploring concepts such as intertextuality, argumentative orientation, and points of view. The primary focus lies on the point of view, intertextuality, and their argumentative role.

The research seeks to contribute significantly to linguistic studies, offering a new perspective on a crucial source for the theological, historical, and literary understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus. The adopted approach promises to bring to light aspects of the discourse that may have been overlooked in more traditional interpretations, revealing nuances relevant to the communities for which the Gospel of Matthew may have been written. Ultimately, the dissertation aims to expand understanding of how books of the Bible can be analyzed in light of linguistic theories, providing a new angle of interpretation that enriches the understanding of the biblical text.
