SUMMARY:

This dissertation examines the construction of the discursive representation of former President Dilma Rousseff by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo during a crucial period in recent Brazilian political history: the first month of her impeachment process. This period, from December 3, 2015, to January 2, 2016, saw the evaluation of the impeachment request by the Chamber of Deputies. The study posits that editorials are opinion pieces through which a news organization presents its stance on national events. The aim is to identify the elements the newspaper used to construct its representation of the then-president. The primary goal is to investigate how one of the major print media outlets portrayed the president during the 31 days following the initiation of the impeachment process. For this purpose, 23 editorials related to Dilma Rousseff were selected, focusing on the impeachment, her government, or her economic policy. This period was chosen due to the impact of the impeachment request on Brazilian society. Since the "June Journeys" of 2013, Rousseff faced intense criticism of her administration, peaking when Cunha accepted the impeachment request on December 2, 2015, leading to her eventual removal on August 31, 2016. The research question is: what discursive representation of Brazil's first female president did Folha de S. Paulo's editorials construct in the month following the opening of her impeachment process? The study is grounded in Textual Linguistics and Textual Discourse Analysis (TDA), particularly in Jean-Michel Adam’s concept of discursive representation (Rd). The methodology is qualitative, employing TDA analysis procedures. Initially, 23 texts were selected over the 31-day period; clauses referring to Dilma Rousseff, her allies, and her political opponents in the impeachment process were identified; these clauses were then described, marking semantic categories of referentiation, predication, and modification; occurrences of each referent, predicate, and modifier were quantified; and finally, the synthesis of Dilma Rousseff's discursive representation constructed by Folha de São Paulo will be analyzed. Preliminary observations indicate that referentiations and predications denote dispute and political opposition, marking the political battle in which the then-president was a protagonist. There is a clear connection among the editorials. The newspaper positions itself as an observer and analyst, highlighting the role of the Supreme Federal Court as a mediator of the dispute. Through markers of positioning, it also reveals its partiality in the proposition of the world it offers to its readers.
