SUMMARY:

Children of blood and bone (2018) is a fantasy fiction, set in West Africa, more specifically in Nigeria, the country of origin of the African American writer, Tomi Adeyemi. The violence in the work begins with the maji population's massacre, an atrocity known as the Raid. Thus, this work's main objective is to analyze the representations of violence in the work and the symbols that portray enslaved peoples while rescuing the Afro identity in the fantastic universe of Orïsha. This is bibliographical research of a qualitative nature, with a theoretical basis in Benjamin (2013) on how violence arises and is established, Butler (2021) discusses non-violence as a factor invoking resistance to face its dominator and the right to mourn, Dorlin (2020), regarding self-defense as a weapon to defend majority minorities; Bakhtin (1998) to address the aesthetics of the work, Chevalier; Gheerbrant (2022) to identify the symbolic artifacts present, among others. The characters who represent the divine ones suffer psychological, physical, and symbolic violence, they are oppressed just like enslaved people, without the right to self-defense, mourning, or anything. In this way, it is clear that the work is more than a fiction of the fantasy genre, it is a narrative that in its completeness emerges questions of a social nature. The violence suffered by the divines provokes questions related to racism, class division, and power relations, common in an unequal society.
