SUMMARY:

The year 2010 marks the beginning of a new and intense influx of Haitian immigration into Brazil. In this setting, it is possible to observe a perverse receptivity to the presence of this immigrant, whose identity is often assumed and stereotyped. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to understand the construction of the identity of Haitian immigrants living in Brazil, based on the discourse of the news media, given that mass communication acts in the construction of representations that individuals create of the world (STAM, 2010). To this end, we are based in the field of Applied Linguistics (AL), from its critical and UNdisciplinary perspective (MOITA LOPES, 1998, 1994, 2006; PENNYCOOK, 2006), which sees the importance of problematizing and thinking about other sociabilities, prompting new political actions. Consequently, we corroborate the need for an AL that questions the rational and Western bases that support scientific practice, which implies choosing to anchor ourselves in voices from the South (SANTOS, 2018; KLEIMAN, 2013). In this context, we draw on the theoretical-methodological premises of Dialogic Discourse Analysis, in which language is understood as the practice of subjects whose acts can be accessed from their linguistic materiality, and studies on cultural identities (FANON, 1968, 2008; CESAIRE, 1978; HALL, 2013; RATTS, 2022; GONZALEZ, 1988; CANCLINI, 2013). Thus, based on a qualitative-interpretative investigation, we analyzed the verbo-visual dimensions (BRAIT, 2008) of news stories about the Haitian presence in Brazil. The preliminary results point to the linguistic and imagistic constructions of the utterances as discursive mechanisms capable of revealing ideological aspects linked to the construction of the Haitian immigrant's identity.
