SUMMARY:

The present work focuses on the theoretical-grammatical treatment of predicative clauses with the verb ficar, as in “fiquei um nojo nesse vestido”, “fico até emocionada com esse evento” and “ficamos passados com o babado”. The central objective is to trace the phenomenon of predication with this verb in contemporary Portuguese usage data, in order to examine the syntactic-semantic and discursive-pragmatic characteristics of the sentences in which the phenomenon manifests itself. Therefore, the research is essentially based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Functional Linguistics (LF), in the North American line, following the classical perspective of this approach, which focuses on the interface between the use and linguistic structure in different interactional contexts. Thus, the research is anchored in the theoretical discussions arising from Furtado da Cunha, Costa and Cezario (2015), Givón (1991, 1995, 2001), Hopper and Thompson (1980), Bybee (2016), Chafe (1970), among others. The methodological treatment focuses on a synchronic research of a basic, descriptive-explanatory nature, guided by the qualitative approach, with quantitative support supported by the frequency of use (Lacerda, 2016), in addition to the deductive-inductive method (Gerhardt; Souza, 2009). The empirical data compose a corpus that comes from tweets linked to various profiles of the social network Twitter, from which 511 samples were investigated between the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, with a view to examining principles and categories of analysis, such as iconicity, marking, (inter)subjectivity, linguistic context, as well as the functions performed by the object of study. The preliminary analysis points out that we are facing occurrences that, in their majority, present a structure composed of anaphoric subject of experiential semantic nature, followed by verb ficar in the present tense and with argument in the function of predicative ranging from adjectives to idiomatic expressions. In the ordering of events, the predicative configuration tends to occur after the exposure of the event that motivated it. Still, the predicative clauses with the verb ficar contemplate both states and changes of states, evidencing, mainly, alterations of more transitory aspects to the detriment of permanent, besides changes more psychological than sensorial or physical.
