SUMMARY:

This study performs the reading of the work “On the difference between the temporal, and eternal; crucible of disappointments, with the memory of eternity, human afterlife, and main divine mysteries”, written by Father Juan Eusebio Nieremberg (1595-1658), of the Society of Jesus, with its first publication in 1640. The writer, in this book, reflects on the Catholic-Christian view, in the Counter-Reformation period, on the concepts of worldly ephemerality and spiritual eternity based on Catholic values. Thus, the objective of this research is to carry out the analysis of this work through the observation of the elements of baroqueism, having as analytical category the ephemeral and the eternal time, because it is a significant recurrence in the author's work. About the motivation for this study, it was based on the observation of the little existing research material regarding the referred book, despite its importance as a material with specificity in the Baroque style. The objective was also to examine the ideological process of colonization and indigenous frontier catechization in South America that the work incorporates. As for the approach, the research is essentially qualitative and bibliographical, through a broad study of the object, considering the context in which the work is inserted. In this direction, the research is guided by a bibliographic survey, as it focuses, above all, on the study of the aforementioned work and theoretical and critical texts on the problem of time as one of the traits of baroque aesthetics. The thesis, therefore, discusses crucial issues conveyed in the analyzed work, such as: religiosity, catechesis, the ephemeral nature of earthly time, as discursive components inherent to baroque aesthetics. Therefore, as a theoretical and critical basis on the Baroque, the reflective thinking of Maravall (2009), João Adolfo Hansen (2001), Samuel Lima (2016), José Manuel Blecua (1984) and Carmen Bustillo (1996) was used. And, as a contribution to the problem of time, Peter Pál Pelbart's notion of non-reconciled time (2007) is the main category of analysis.
