SUMMARY:

The present research seeks to discuss the stereotyped representation of Black people in the novel Úrsula (1956), the object of our research and the first Brazilian novel written by a black woman, Maria Firmina dos Reis, based on Bakhtin’s (2015) theory of the novel  as well as the writings of the authors from the Bakhtin Circle and on the studies of Brookshaw (1983), who brings a classification of stereotypes of Black characters found in Brazilian literature. In this sense, its general objective is to understand the representation of black characters in Úrsula. Specifically, we intend to reflect and identify the possible stereotypes used by the author to represent the black characters, namely, Túlio, Susana, and Antero, and to analyze the ideological formation of these characters based on studies of the stereotypical representation of Black people in literature. The theoretical framework is based on Bakhtin’s studies (2015) as well as studies on the classification of stereotypes of slaves in Brazilian literature according to Brookshaw (1983). Moreover, our discussion on the historical and cultural context of slavery is based on Gomes’s studies (2020). The analysis carried out so far shows that the practice of stereotyping used by 19th-century writers was reverberated by Maria Firmina dos Reis when creating her Black characters, because although she tries to escape the “white symbolism” of the time, giving voice to her characters, she failed to build her characters in a non-stereotypical way.
