SUMMARY:

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the category discourse plan and situated metaphor in opinion articles. We aim to analyze the interconnection between the discourse plan of argumentative texts, particularly, opinion articles, and the use of situated metaphors, with or without metonymic support, considering, still, the performance of the functional mechanisms of (inter)subjectivity and pragmatic inference. We support theoretically in a functional-cognitive perspective, based on Givón (1995, 2001, 2011 [1979]), Tomasello (1998), Traugott and Dasher (2002), Bybee (2010), Furtado da Cunha, Costa and Cezario (2015), Lakoff (1987), Fauconnier (1997), Fauconnier and Turner (2002), Lakoff and Johnson (2003 [1980]), Steen (2011), among others. We anchor on Hopper and Thompson (1980), Haido (1996), and Lemos (2020), for discussions on discourse plane, and on Vereza (2007, 2013, 2016, 2017), for situated metaphor. Methodologically, we use both inductive and deductive reasoning. The research is qualitative and descriptive-explanatory in nature. The empirical material of analysis is composed of four opinion articles distributed in macro-themes that include education and culture, security, and politics. The preliminary results show that, as for the discursive plane of the texts, the situated metaphors (online) are preferentially used in figure position, constituting a mechanism employed in the service of argumentation in the analyzed texts. The findings also show that the process of creation/understanding of these metaphors produced online is supported by cognitive models, such as the CONCEPTUAL BLENDING and the IMAGE SCHEMAS. These models circumstantiate the way we understand such metaphors, thus intertwining cognition, discourse, and language. In this direction, we verify that the construction of situated metaphors is to form as cognitive processes prior to language are to function. Our preliminary conclusions evidence the close relationship between form and function, defended by the theoretical framework on which we are based.
