SUMMARY:

Research shows that strategic planning may be helpful to the development of learners’ L2 speech production. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the effect of planning on L2 speech production. In this sense, it intends to verify how different types of planning (no-planning, individual planning and planning in pairs) may impact the speech production of L2 learners (in terms of accuracy, weighted lexical density, fluency and outcome), to analyze the role of calibration in the development of L2 learners’ speech production and to identify which cognitive and metacognitive strategies are part of this process. Sixty-three speakers of English as L2 integrated the cohort of the study. All participants answered a questionnaire about personal information, performed three speech production tasks, attributed a grade to each assigned task and answered a questionnaire about the cognitive and metacognitive strategies applied on the speech production. Results indicate that, in relation to fluency, there was statistical significance in regard to planning in pairs and that, in this type of planning, learners also showed greater degree of confidence in the success of their speech production. However, individual planning was the one in which learners displayed the most adjusted calibration of their speech production.  In what concerns to accuracy, weighted lexical density and outcome, the fact of having planned individually or in pairs did not seem to have made any difference on participants’ L2 speech. In addition, findings about participants' perceptions suggest that they used different planning strategies and that they considered planning in pairs to be the most beneficial to the development of their L2 speech production.
