Multifunctionality of the connector quando (when) in argumentative texts
Functional Linguistics. Adverbial hypotaxis. Semantic multifunctionality. The connector quando (when).
This paper discusses the uses of the connector quando (when) in argumentative texts from the journalistic sphere, particularly editorials and opinion articles. The main purpose is to analyze the uses of this connector, identifying the semantic values conveyed by it and the factors that contingent such uses. The theoretical support is the North American Functional Linguistics, as outlined in Givón (1984, 1995), Hopper (1991), Matelotta (2011), Furtado da Cunha, Costa and Cezario (2015). This research is qualitative and has quantitative support, and the empirical database is composed of written texts, that comes from the online newspapers O Globo, Folha de São Paulo, Correio Braziliense, and Estadão. These written texts are editorials and opinion articles published between June 2021 and June 2022. Preliminary results shows that the connector quando (When) conveys other semantic values besides temporal, such as condition, cause, and concession. Some verbal categories, particularly tense, aspect, and mood, as well as the conveyed content and communicative purposes implied in the argumentative texts taken in account, favor this semantic extension.
