SUMMARY:

The inauguration of the Language-Libras graduation course in Brazil, in 2006, marks the entry of deaf subjects who sign in a higher level course in our country in a volume never seen before. Encouraged by federal development programs and inspired by universities that did so before it, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) opened its course in 2013, and today it already has ten classes formed. In one hand of the path delineated by this course until now, it is noticed that the deaf presence in higher education imprints important traces on the universities where the degree in question takes place, since it is impossible for the institutions to remain oblivious to the culture intrinsic to the existence of deaf students and professionals acting on them. On the other hand, in addition to professional identities, academic life provides deaf people with intersubjective relationships and social practices favorable to the construction of unique academic identities, knitted between shared and private experiences. This research aims to understand how academic identities of deaf people participating in the extension course “Ser Academico”, who are graduating students and former students of the Licentiate Degree in Languages-Libras/Portuguese as a second language for the deaf in UFRN (CLLP/UFRN), are constituted. Our corpus consists of concrete utterances, signed in Libras, during the second class of the project, about deaf academic life. We are situated on the porous frontier between the research fields of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006; KLEIMAN, 2013; PENNYCOOK, 2006; FABRÍCIO, 2017) and Deaf Studies (SKLIAR, 2010; KARNOPP; KLEIN; LUNARDI-LAZZARIN, 2011; LADD , 2010, 2013; LANE, 1992; KUSTERS; DE MEULDER; O'BRIEN, 2016; MURRAY, 2016), having as analytical lenses the theoretical-philosophical notions of the Bakhtin Circle (BAKHTIN, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018; VOLÓSHINOV , 2017, 2019; MEDVIÉDEV, 2012). At this point in the research, what calls our attention is the fact that the multiple deaf academic identities woven in the CLLP/UFRN are sewn together in the tension between discursive threads about the Portuguese language and Libras, human languagesconsidered by us as ideological signs representing  centripetal and centrifugal forces, respectively, both incident on the entire student career of deaf subjects.
