SUMMARY:

This study investigates the text sequences in the defense discourse of the former president of the Federal Republic of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, in the law-suit for high crimes and misdemeanors. This act culminated in the impeachment of the former president, which began in 2015, when Eduardo Cunha – former president of the Federal House of Representatives – accpeted the denouncement made by Hélio Bicudo – retired public prosecutor – and the lawyers Miguel Reale Junior and Janaina Paschoal. The law-suit resulted in the former presidents removal from office on the 31st of August, 2016. However, the discourse of Dilma Rousseff’s defense, the object of our study, was developed by the former Federal Attorney General, José Eduardo Cardoso, on April 4th, 2016, and quickly sent for review by the House of Representatives’ Special Commission. We justify this choice of corpus as it addresses a document that legitimizes the defense of the former president in the face of the accusation of high crimes and misdemeanors, considering it an important political, legal, historical and social document of our country. The research is based on the presuppositions of Textual Discourse Analysis, as developed by Jean-Michel Adam. Regarding the methodological aspects, we establish our work as primarily qualitative, documentary and interpretive in nature. To this end, we use inductive and deductive methods. Our preliminary results point to a preference in the use of an asserted point of view, in which the first speaker enunciator, through linguistic strategies, for example, the use of text sequences, manifests their opinion and argumentativley directs the text, postulating the idea of nullness in the reception of the dennouncement of the law-suit, due to ill will on the part of Eduardo Cunha.
