THE SILENT PRESENCE OF ORALITY IN A 6TH LEVEL ENGLISH COURSE BOOK: BRIDGES AND PEACEMAKERS
English language; promotion of orality; textbook; English language activities.
The present research is based on the analysis of the proposals of activities focused
on the linguistic skill related to orality present in English language textbooks. Through
a critical qualitative analysis, we aimed to investigate the promotion of speaking in
two textbooks that were included among the materials pre-selected by the National
Program of Books and Teaching Materials (PNLD) in 2018. The analyzed books
belong to two collections from different publishers with layout and contents based on
the proposals defined by the Common National Curricular Base (BNCC). For the
theoretical contribution, authors focusing on methods, teaching and learning of
English were essential in the composition of the research, among them Almeida Filho
(1991; 1998), Leffa (1999; 2016), Oliveira (2014) and Paiva (2003). As for the
textbook, the National Common Curricular Base and authors such as Tomlinson
(2011), Richards (2001) and Lajolo (1996) were used as sources. The research was
conducted to be qualitative, capturing the subjective ideas before a reflection with
critical analysis about the evaluated books, based on Nunan (2009), Littlewood
(2004) and Bygate (1987) to guide the research analysis. Based on the information
analyzed we conducted a reflection on the promotion of orality in the English
language activities present in the textbooks and how these activities contribute to the
promotion of communication in the English language and to the interaction among
learners in the English language. Among the main results observed we highlight the
significant presence of the Portuguese language in speaking activities and we also
identify the presence of communication activities with interaction among learners
based on ready-made dialogues.
