ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed people's lives in many ways, especially those involved with education, whose activity was even more impacted. Such changes required a reconfiguration of the schools’ way of functioning, which had to seek alternatives to guarantee access to educational practices in a new format. Among the requirements to adapt to this new type of teaching, schools and teachers were required to implement innovative pedagogical practices and methodologies, mediated by technologies, according to the Emergency Remote Teaching (ERE) rules for the pandemic. This emerged as a challenge for teachers and students, especially those in the Brazilian public schoolsystem.Based on this problem, this research aims to investigate whether literacy projects can contribute to literacy and literacy processes aimed at the citizen training of students in the early years of elementary school in this new type of education required by the pandemic context. Regarding its underlying theoretical framework, this study is based, firstly, on sociocultural literacy studies, which assume reading and writing as social practices, then,on the assumptions of the Bakhtin Circle, which propose the linguistic approach and the studieson discursive genres the process of social interaction, and, finally, on the contributions of the New Rhetoric, whose assumptions conceive the discursive genre as social action. Regarding methodology, this research is within the field of Applied Linguistics and is configured as action research. The data were collected in 2021at the Professor Severino Bezerra state school, in Tangará/RN, in a 5th grade class of the Elementary School. A qualitative, interpretive approach is assumed in the data analysis. Preliminary results revealed an improvement in students' reading and writing training and a greater familiarity with argumentative genres, in addition to a greater mastery of technologies in school literacy practices. By assuming social practice as the organizing axis of the teaching process, the literacy project resized both literacy and literacy processes of students. This made literate practices more meaningful and fostered reading and writing learning with them.By providing different reading practices and working with discursive genres, such as cartoons, news, reports, etc., developed in literacy workshops, the students learned to write argumentative texts of different genres (comments, opinion articles, etc.), to stand up and defend their opinions, thus, becoming more autonomous and critical. This revealed the important role of the literacy project for critical education, which aims to train students for the effective exercise of citizenship.
