SUMMARY:

The present study aims to perform a reading of the novel Gizinha (1930), by the norte-rio-grandense writer Polycarpo Feitosa, from the experience of women, proposing new meanings to the literary text and expanding considerably its potentiality. Thus, it is intended to analyze the construction of the feminine in the modernist scenario, investigating the social roles played by the characters of the novel Gizinha are reflections of the change of mindset of this society in transition, in the context of Rio Grande do Norte. From this, it seeks to confirm whether the novel builds a representation of the identity of women that contributes to undertaking a discussion about the permanence of dominant themes and tensions in the norte-rio-grandense literature, in order to characterize how regional traditions interact in process of building the meaning of the modern. For understanding the chosen theme, it is necessary to consider literature from a historical perspective. Thus, this work dialogues with the theoretical guidelines of Le Goff (2013) and Paz (1984), about the dichotomy established between tradition and modernity; of Candido (2017a, 2017b; 2019) and Bueno (2006), for the study of the influences of modernism in the Brazilian national and regional context; of Araújo (1995; 2022) and Ferreira (2000; 2008), regarding the repercussions of the modernist movement in the Rio Grande do Norte space; of Showalter (1994) and Moi (1999), to establish the founding bases of feminist criticism; of Lauretis (2019) and Woodward (2014), regarding the cultural construction of identities.
