SUMMARY:

The works of Eugenio Coseriu constitute a relevant theoretical contribution about meaning in language theory, since, for this author, text linguistics is a hermeneutics of meaning, that is, it is a discipline whose central attribution is to prove and justify the meaning of texts. In this scenario, this thesis intends to investigate, under the coserian postulates, the conception of meaning in studies grounded on the philosophy of language, such as those of John Searle (1995; 2002), one of the continuators of the speech act theory, and Jacques Derrida (2006; 2009), an expressive name of post-structuralism. Assuming an essentially theoretical path, this research is characterized, methodologically, as bibliographical, explanatory, of basic nature, qualitative approach (Gil, 2017; Severino, 2017) and presents as a general objective to describe and analyze, comparatively, the conception of meaning according to Searle and Derrida, using as a term of comparison the three linguistic levels - universal, historical and individual -, according to Coseriu (1980; 2007). For this purpose, the following specific objectives are formulated: a) to identify the conception of meaning present in the above mentioned studies; b) to compare the conception of meaning for each of the mentioned authors and, finally, c) to elaborate, based on the three levels, a synthesis for the definition of meaning based on examples of interpretations resulting from the process of translation of the literary text, due to the fact that the poetic saying represents, for Coseriu, the full functionality of language. As far as the results are concerned, besides contributing to the diffusion of Eugenio Coseriu's work, it is possible to verify, preliminarily, that the proposal of the construction of meaning according to each one of the levels of language represents a considerable resource to subsidize the investigations around the meaning, a precept that constitutes the basis of an integral Coserian linguistics.
