SUMMARY:

This paper consists in the critical reading of Rastejo novel (2017), by the north-rio-grandense writer Humberto Hermenegildo de Araújo. For that, we are methodologically anchored in the integrative sociological criticism of Antonio Candido (2002; 2005; 2010), through which we understand how the work of the potiguar artist is registered in the contemporary Brazilian cultural perspective, updating the regionalist tradition of the twentieth century. As a research plan, we started with a contextual discussion about literature as a civilizing phenomenon, from what we put the writer place in the society. Then, we revisit the theory of candido systems (2017a), in a counterpoint with the criticism of Câmara Cascudo (1998). From this synthesis, we noticed a set of principles that, articulated with each other, allow us to perceive literature as a functional system, in whose organization smaller systems are developed, about this issue, the northeastern and potiguar literatures. Therefore, we will discuss the theme of regionalism, genetically understood as a universal disposition (CHIAPPINI, 1978; 1991), which is configured from a sentimental bond between the subject and his native space (BORGES, 2007; 2009). We are oriented, in order to deepen the issue, mainly by the studies of Candido (2002a; 2017a; 2017c; 2017d), Lafetá (2000), Bueno (2015), Gomes (2008) and also by Humberto Hermenegildo's own criticism (1991; 1997; 1998), which assimilates the theme to his intellectual project, putting it into evaluation and reconfiguring it in the production of his fiction. Finally, we will demonstrate, in the field of textual analysis, how Araújo's novel enables the continuity of regionalism in literature, updating it, in residual form (WILLIAMS, 1979), to the extent that it transposes to the narrative field, the representation of the countryside man in another stage, as a remnant, when impacted by the experience of urban time and space of hostile modernity (BENJAMIN, 2012a; COMPAGNON, 2010). This tension is understood, in our investigation, by the theory of chronotope (BAKHTIN, 2014b), which gives rise to the understanding of the primary configuration, which is the ontology of the problematic and melancholic hero (LUKÁCS, 2009; LIMA, 2017), in response to the contradictions of modernity. In the constitutive field of the character, this will be effective, therefore, in the narrative discourse of the first person (ADORNO, 2012b; GINZBURG, 2012; DAL FARRA, 1978), through those memories (CANDAU, 2019; LE GOFF, 2013) are projected in clear denial to the present capitalist reificator experienced in the city.
