SUMMARY:

The present work aims to establish a study of the character in the novels Grande Sertão: Veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Yong Man, by James Joyce. This is a comparative investigation. For this, our thesis articulates the dialogue between the works restricting the observation of the heroes under three aspects. First, we take the novels from the perspective of the Bildungsroman tradition. We present the historical course of this novelistic subgenre, in order to position and justify the objects of study in this category. We resort to the works of Franco Moretti (2020); Mikhail Bakhtin (2018) and Georg Lukacs (2000), among others. In a second moment, we observe how the authors resort to mythical models – of Faust and Dedalus – for the construction of characters. We start from an analysis of the mythical form and its literary function, under the theoretical perspective of Barthes (2001) and Mielietinski (1987), and then we try to understand how this function operates in the works taken for study. Finally, we investigate how the narrative procedures and temporal subjectivity, characteristics of the modern novel, reveal the psychological profile of these characters. For this, we resort to texts by Anatol Rosenfeld (1996), Erich Auerbach (2015) and Theodor Adorno (2003).
