SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to investigate the representation of the civil-military dictatorship regime (1964-1985) in the following novels: K. – Relato de uma busca (2014), by Bernardo Kucinski; Cabo de guerra (2016), by Ivone Benedetti; and A noite de espera (2017), by Milton Hatoum. In this regard, by seeking to understand how the Brazilian authoritarian experience appears in the formal structure of these works (CANDIDO, 2006), we have observed that the recurrence of the traumatic experience is a common element within the three narratives, manifesting itself in different times and places. Thus, our study analyzes the three novels from the concept of trauma proposed by Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2000; 2003; 2005), paying special attention to the roles of both the narrator and time in the fictional construction of the selected works. Furthermore, in more general terms, in addition to approaching the traumatic experiences in the narratives from the notions of dream, mourning, and melancholy established by Sigmund Freud (2006; 2012), we also have theoretically subsidized our research on the notions of torture (MALAVER, 2016; VIÑAR, 1992), exile (SAID, 2003; ROLLEMBERG, 1999), and guilt (LEVI, 2004; SCLIAR, 2007). With this in mind, we have become aware that the novels studied show a tendency of the literature published in the context of the fiftieth anniversary of the Military Coup (2014) to expose, through narrators located in the present, the permanence and intensification of traumas experienced before, during, and after the dictatorship. Therefore, by identifying the recurrence of this type of narrative composition, we may envision the formation of a new strand in Brazilian literary fiction, whose main characteristic is the unveiling of the erratic way in which Brazil has dealt with its dictatorial heritage.
