SUMMARY:

A range of political debates have arisen in Brazilian society with the rise of political parties with opposing proposals, and the so-called polarization of minds has proven to be one of the most complex problems we face today. According to Lakoff (2008), this division takes place primarily in our minds, since “almost everything we understand about public discourse is not in the words themselves, but in the unconscious understanding that we bring to words” (Lakoff, 2008). To understand politics and its social consequences, we first need to understand what goes on in our brains when we listen to political discourse, and frames are a door to understanding this system, as they structure our thoughts, develop our political ideals and , finally, make us decide who to vote for. Frames, therefore, are the basis of our politics. There is, however, a specific type of frame common to the notion of politics, the moral frame. To understand how moral frame works, we need to understand how our brain structures our moral ideals through the first institution of which we are a part: the family. For this reason, this work aims to analyze the contemporary book “The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão”, in order to understand how the author structures the moral frames that guide the characters in the novel. Therefore, the well-being metaphors (Lakoff, 2008) are used as a basis for analysis, with the ultimate goal of presenting a traditional Brazilian middle-class family model that represents the conservative precepts, in order to understand how this model of family influences our way of doing politics.
