SUMMARY:

From the perspective of Variationist Sociolinguistics, this thesis aims to analyze the first-person plural pronominal variation between “NÓS” and “A GENTE” as variants. The data consists in extracts of speech which were collected from episodes of the program Resenhas do RN. We transcribed 16 programs recorded in different towns of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), from which we collected 720 occurrences, including the speech of the interviewees and the program's presenter, Manu Pessoa. Manu's speech plays a central role in this work, considering that we developed a specific analysis focused on the presenter adaptation at different contexts during the program: in her initial narration, she might have used a more formal style of speech, permeated by scripturality; in a second moment, when presenting the episode and talking directly to the program's audience, Manu's speech may have been similar to linguistic neutrality; finally, while interviewing program participants, their linguistic uses might have been closer to conversationalization, given the attempt to get closer to the participants. For the development of the research, we rely on Labov (2001; 2004; 2008 [1972]), Tagliamonte (2006, 2012), Androutsopoulos (2014), Omena (2003), Vianna and Lopes (2015), among other. The research in question is characterized by the quantitative treatment of data, whose method can be classified as inductive. In terms of procedures, the approach is experimental. It is important to consider that the research is also bibliographical and documentary, considering the other analytical procedures, synchronic, in terms of time, and semasiological, in terms of domain. We also investigated the influence of social and linguistic factors in the use of pronouns, namely: gender, age, education/profession as extralinguistic factors and formal parallelism and determination of the referent as linguistic factors.
