SUMMARY:

Periodicals, essentially in the nineteenth-century period, assumed a significant role: besides informing, they also had the function of forming new readers.  The social and historical context of the time provided an increase in the transatlantic circulation of ideas and cultural goods, so that authors such as Schiller, Goethe, Schlegel and others also reached Brazilian readers. Using the data collection of Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira, we will analyze the presence of Friedrich Schiller in the Brazilian 19th century press. We investigate the conjunctures and arguments that involve the translation, circulation and the imagetic construction of the German author, representative of the Sturm and Drang movement and of the Classicism of Weimar, which are exemplified in the publications with his occurrences in Brazilian periodicals. We will highlight the following periodicals: Diário do Rio de Janeiro (1821-59/1860-78) and Jornal de Recife (1859-1938) and Correio Mercantil, and Instructivo, Politico, Universal (1848 - 1868). Schiller is introduced to Brazil in the mid-nineteenth century through translations and theatrical performances. Among the translators of the German author are the Sergipe writer Tobias Barreto and the Maranhão poet Antônio Gonçalves Dias. The contributions present a surprising heterogeneity of information and dissemination strategies of the mentioned author, considered canonical in his country of origin, being included and present via the dynamics of translation and periodical circulation as part of a universal canon. Besides the thematic variety, interdisciplinarity and the frequency in the mentions of Schiller and his works, there are also subjects such as his friendship with Goethe and curiosities about his personal life. Besides the praises, one notices in several moments resemanticizations of Schiller's aesthetic ideas and the interest in approaching, for example, in the context of discourses on the formation of Brazilian literature and society itself, critical discussions about Die Räuber [The Robbers] with emphasis on the moral function of the hero and the different understanding of the theme freedom. In the first part of the analysis, we seek to present this scenario by categorizing the mentions of the writer in the periodicals, which are: works, biographical facts and curiosities, criticism and analysis, Schiller and other authors, theater and auctions, sales and acquisitions.  In the second part, we delve into Schiller's presence in the context of his 19th century translators.  We deal with the corpus based on the theoretical-methodological concept of Cultural Transfers by Michel Espagne (2017) and Pascale Casanova (2002), in addition to the economic-sociological approach of Pierre Bourdieu (2002). We use as a reference for historical periodicals from the transatlantic perspective of the history of printed matter the collections of Granja and Luca (2018), Guimarães (2012) and Barbosa (2007). We understand the presence of Schiller as a relevant mosaic in the formation of the foreign cultural memory of Brazilian Literature during the Nineteenth Century. And we highlight with the present work the still little explored potential of Brazilian historical periodicals, contributing to these new perspectives in the areas of Comparative Literature, History of the Press and Germanistic Studies in Brazil.
