The present qualification material, entitled The prose of Aurélio Pinheiro and his multifaceted world of letters: links between fiction and profession in the face of modernity's tensions, presents an essayistic reading about the literary production of Aurélio Pinheiro situated in the context of the first decades of the 20th century, with an emphasis on the 1930s. The methodological choices were based on the theses defended by Antonio Candido (1976, 1987, 2012) that present the need for integration between criticism, theory and literary history. Initially, we present a contextualization of Modernism and Regionalism in Brazilian literature and a study of fictional production in Rio Grande do Norte in the first decades of the 20th century. Then, we seek to analyze the trajectory of Aurélio Pinheiro's intellectual production, based on biography and bibliographical research, showing his relationship with the Amazon scenario and between literature and medicine in his intellectual production. Finally, we dedicated ourselves to the novel production in the 1930s, from the tensions of modernity, with the melancholic subject as a consequence. As a result, we seek to show the different aspects of writing by Aurélio Pinheiro as a humanist integrated into his space. For this, the research had as theoretical orientation, primarily, the studies of Antonio Candido (1976; 1987; 2012), Afrânio Coutinho (2004), Alfredo Bosi (2003), Luis Lafetá (2000), Luís Bueno (2006), Walter Benjamin (1985), Mikhail Bakhtin (2010; 2015), Jüngen Habermas (2000), Susana Kampff Lages (2007), Jean Starobinski (2014) among others.
