SUMMARY:

This thesis analyzes the novel “Maçã agreste” by writer Raimundo Carrero and follows the narrative path of three of its characters who go beyond the limits of pages of the work and appear in other narratives published by the writer between 1995 and 2013. Such characters are part of a family whose patriarch is the character Ernesto Cavalcante do Rego. Son of a powerful man, Ernesto is irresponsible, profiteer, prejudiced, racist, sexist and opportunist. Despite belonging to elite, he decays and in old age he finds himself in extreme poverty, so that his descendants are characters socially marginalized by poverty, by their professions and the spaces they occupy. The work has as one of the strongest subjects, violence. This, despite appearing at different times explicit, points to the idea that society is organized in order to enable that some forms of violence are practiced against some social groups and, somehow, are made invisible. Thus, the aim of this work is to investigate whether aesthetics, construction of characters, language and structural organization present in the work “Maçã agreste” are used as an instrument to explain structural violence present in contemporary society. With regard to the theme of violence, we use Butler's (2015) concepts of ethical violence, Bourdieu's symbolic violence (2001, 2012), from the control of bodies and Foucault's Panopticism (1988, 2014); to the character category analysis we use the precepts of Candido (2007) on the character in the novel and Brait (1985) on the character in the narrative; as to the relationship between literature and violence we use Lins (1990) and Ginzburg (2012). The research is qualitative in nature, as it seeks to investigate the elements that make up the work's aesthetics, such as narrative focus, type of speech, language used to compose each character, and its importance to understand and justify the presence of the theme of violence. The hypothesis is that the constant presence of violence in the work is a strategy to draw attention to the idea that the society is violent in its structure, based on a set of norms and precepts that dictates who, when, and where to get things done. Since the way society organizes itself, it allows violence to be practiced constantly and that people do not see or pretend not to see. This happens in a disguised way and results in inequality social and oppression. This type of attitude that can be understood as structural violence is a strong presence in the work of Raimundo Carrero in a plot composed of acts of socially marginalized characters, in actions that reflect this marginalization which is imposed on them. Which is answered with suffering and violent actions that it is naturalized by a society that refuses to recognize itself in this as participant in this action.
