SUMMARY:

Based on an understanding of literature that encompasses linguistic particularities alongside the representation of social life, as proposed by the integral procedure established by Antonio Candido (2014, 2017), this study elects violence and silence as axis to its analysis of the contemporary novel Não falei, by writer Beatriz Bracher. The novel is elaborated through the narrative of a man that remembers the time when he was subjected to torture during the Brazilian civil and military dictatorship, time frame in which he suffered, besides physical subjugation, with the loss of a friend, Armando, a revolutionary activist murdered by the Brazilian state. The capture of Armando is linked, by relatives and acquaintanceships, to the narrator himself, accused of giving away information during torture that occasioned the killing. Amidst such context, many intersections of violence and silence are found both in the torture room, where staying silent meant resistance, as in the present, when the main character remains hesitant in elaborating his past to family and friends. Being torture an experience that pushes human beings to their very limit and is defining to the narrator’s life, we study violence based on the contributions of Jaime Ginzburg (2012, 2017) and Márcio Séligmann-Silva (2000), registering, about such theme, its traumatic impacts, according to psychoanalytical theory of Sigmund Freud (1972, 2012). Similarly, observing the different dimensions in which silence is stablished within the narrative, especially in instances that resume past aggressions and its effects, we analyse silence understanding it as a sign (BARTHES, 2003) that has a different nature from the one found in verbal language (ORLANDI, 2007). Silence can also be an evidence of social oppression (HOLANDA, 1992). The study of such matters indicates the relevance of the literary work in manifesting a singular perspective of a traumatic historical event, elucidating, through fiction, what was covered by the official discourses.
