BIG AREA: Linguística, Letras e Artes
AREA: Linguística
SUBÁREA: Linguística Aplicada
SUMMARY:

The recent national linguistic policies have given greater importance to the teaching of the English language at school and in the teaching of a foreign language in Brazil (LDB).Even though, given this importance, what we have until then is that the work with speaking in English (LI) in classrooms still finds difficulties in establishing itself as an effective approach and this is an aggravation given the relevance of a communicative approach to a context of teaching a second language (L2) (ALMEIDA FILHO, 2000, 2001). That said, the present research work proposes a didactic sequence (ZABALA, 1998; DOL, NOVERRAZ and SCHNEUWLY, 2004) with Role-playing Game (RPG) games to provide input and stimulate oral production in English classrooms. This didactic sequence proposal (SD) contains 3 games that try to develop speaking skills (Speaking Competence) in English and engage students in their own learning while exposing them to some RPG formats in order to prepare them so they can continue the project in their own way. The games in this project were based on a personal design and perfected in the principles of game design aimed at teaching (JARVINEN, 2008) and planned here for English language classrooms, doing so to seek and for considering the most varied environments to teach this language. The theoretical framework is based on studies of active learning (SCHANK, 1995; WELTMAN, 2007), studies that advocate the use of RPGs in teaching (FAIRCHILD, 2004, VASQUES, 2008 and FLOYD D. and PORTNOW 2008), teaching English in particular (LEFFA, BOHN, DAMASCENO and MARZARI, 2012) with focus on the development of Speaking Competence (GOH and BURNS, 2012).  In this way, the research fits into the studies of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006) in its area of studies concentration: teaching and learning languages. With this project, we hope that our proposals with RPGs can develop and foster speaking competence in the English language classroom, stimulate students to engage in these meetings and thereby encourage discussions about the use of RPG games in teaching and learning of languages.
