SUMMARY:

This work aims to investigate how teachers of Federal Institute of Sertão Pernambucano (IF Sertão PE) build their teaching identity and represent their work in job literacy events. Methodologically, this research is inserted in the inter and transdisciplinary area of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006; 2013; SIGNORINI, 1998), with a qualitative approach (BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 1994; CHIZZOTTI, 2005) and ethnographic (BARTON, 2012). Data generation was carried out in two distinct moments, taken here as literacy events (BARTON; HAMILTON, 2000): conversation circle, held during the programming of the 1st Seminar Building senses in the workplace, at IF Sertão PE, Salgueiro campus, and during the Pedagogical Meeting of that campus. It was possible to constitute, as analysis corpus, the audio and video transcriptions of these events, the field notes and some research locus photographs. To understand the phenomenon studied in its complexity and the inter and transdisciplinary nature of Applied Linguistics, the investigation is theoretically based on the assumptions of Literacy Studies (KLEIMAN, 1995; KLEIMAN; ASSIS, 2016; STREET, 1995), on the contributions of research on Labor Literacy (PAZ, 2008), discussions in Social Sciences about identities (HALL, 2011; BAUMAN, 2005; GIDDENS, 2012) and Social Psychology about social representations (MOSCOVICI, 2013). The partial analysis of the data allowed to perceive representations of teaching anchored in the initial training of male and female teachers; the need to serve as a reference / example for students; in the experience and comparison with former teachers of these teachers and in suffering as a crossing factor. The identities under construction of these teachers, in turn, appear in multiple facets, manifested through relations of power (a prestigious situation) and relationships situated by gender, race and social and geographical factors. The contribution of this work lies in the understanding of how teachers can, by themselves, (de) construct meanings about their métier (BRONCKART, 2006) through institutional literate practices, as teachers of Basic, Technical and Technological Education in the Sertão Pernambucano.
