SUMMARY:

In this thesis, we aim to understand the portfolio as a literacy practice experienced in a qualification course for the work activity of caregivers for the elderly. The training process was carried out by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte through the National Program for Access to Technical Education and Employment (PRONATEC). In methodological terms, this study falls within the area of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2009; 2016) and follows a qualitative research data approach. (BODGAN; BIKLEN, 1994 AND MINAYO, 2002). The corpus was constituted from portfolios produced by students in training and a questionnaire applied to these subjects. Regarding the theoretical foundations, the investigation is based on the assumptions of Literacy Studies as a social practice, defended by (HEATH, 1983; BARTON, 1991, 1994; STREET, 1995; BARTON; HAMILTON, 2000, KLEIMAN, 1995); the discussions on Labor Literacy (NOUROUDINE, 2002; DUARTE; FEITOSA, 1998; PAZ, 2008), the Theory of Discursive Genres (BAKHTIN, [1979] 2011; BAKHTIN / VOLOSHINOV, [1929] 2009) and Allusive Studies to the use portfolio (CARVALHO; PORTO, 2005; AMBRÓSIO, 2013; 2015). The analysis of the data indicates that the production of the portfolios is a literacy practice that allows the course participants to describe their training journey. Also, it allows them to reflect on the contents studied as an effective practice in the work activity and the changes in attitude that they must assume at the time to exercise the profession of caregiver. In terms of contributions, this work contributes to the expansion of discussions regarding literacy practices, notably issues involving training and work activities carried out by the caregiver of the elderly as a job on the rise in the job Market. As a result of given the growing rates longevity reached by the Brazilian population.
