SUMMARY:

The conception of the United States of America as a land of freedom, wealth and opportunities has spread exponentially over the years, turning this country into the destination of immigrants from all over the world. This movement created diverse communities that once established, also gave rise to literary communities. Considering that the science of literature establishes a close relationship with the cultural history of social communities (BAKHTIN, 2017), we aim to analyze two works of the contemporary literature of North American minority groups, namely, the novels Samba Dreamers (2006), written by Brazilian-American Kathleen de Azevedo, and Ocotillo Dreams (2011), by Mexican-American Melinda Palacio, through the studies of the Bakhtin Circle (Bakhtin, Volóchinov and Medviédev). Taking the process of ideological formation of the protagonists in the two works as an object of study, we seek to confront the process of identity formation of the characters, as well as to observe the representation of the border in the work’s architectonics (BAKHTIN, 2002). This bibliographic research has its methodology supported by the sociological method established by Volóchinov (2019) and Bakhtin (2015), in which the analysis can only start from the pure verbal essence, in search of its social significance in the concrete context of the works. In addition to the discussions on identities and borderlands (ANZALDÚA, 1987), the preliminary results of this comparative/ dialogical study between the novels point to the identity formation of the characters in the experience of three different borders: the linguistic border, gender border, and ancestral border.
