SUMMARY:

This study focuses on the reception of the novel As serpentes que roubaram a noite e outros mitos (2011), by indigenous author Daniel Munduruku. The participants are three teenagers amongst the ages of 14 and 16 years old, eighth grade students at a public school in Extremoz-RN. As a qualitative action research in development, this work has as its steps the story retelling of myths and the subsequent discussion with the subjects in a conversation group. The dissertation is based on Law 11.645/2008, from the Brazilian legal system, that establishes the obligatoriness of African, African-Brazilian and Indigenous history and culture being taught in school, and on 2018’s BNCC (National Common Curricular Basis) that determines the storytelling and retelling as a necessary skill in the late years of middle school. As theorical contributions, we used the studies of storytelling researchers such as Cléo Busatto (2006), Eliana Yunes (2012) and Élie Bajárd (2016), the later with the concept of retelling, which is central to this research and speaks of a methodology that points to oral tradition and the reconstruction of the reading. On the matter of indigenous literature, we based ourselves on Janice Thiél (2012, 2013, 2016) and Maria Inês de Almeida e Sônia Queiroz (2004). The understanding of myth and indigenous mythologies are approached considering the works of anthropologist Cláude Levi-Strauss (1978) and mythologists Mircea Eliade (1972), Joseph Campbell (1990) and indigenous intellectuals Daniel Munduruku (2008, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and Ailton Krenak (2019). During the analysis of the retold stories, we interpreted the data considering the theoretical references presented and had the following results: the meanings given by the participants to the myths were influenced by their previous knowledge of indigenous culture, their horizons of expectation and the differences between the reader’s and the novel’s historical horizons (Hans Robert Jauss, 1994;  Maria da Glória Bordini e Vera Teixeira Aguiar, 1993), provoking a strangeness to some of the cultural aspects presented by the narratives and the non-recognition of supernatural beings.
