SUMMARY:

This thesis takes transitivity as its object of study, as it manifests itself in Brazilian Portuguese and in Mundurukú. In particular, it deals with the description and comparative analysis of transitivity-causative, medium and passive sentences, seeking to establish typological convergences and divergences between the two languages. These clauses conceptualize a causation event, defined as an event in which an animated agent intentionally causes a noticeable physical change of state or location in an object. The research database consists of corpora of native speakers, already constituted, in oral and written form. In the case of Mundurukú, we use the data available in Gomes (2006). This material was collected in the Mundurukú indigenous area, more precisely in the Sai-Cinzas and Katõ villages. For BP, we used Corpus discurso & Gramática: a língua falada e escrita na cidade do Natal (FURTADO DA CUNHA, 1998) and Banco Conversacional de Natal (FURTADO DA CUNHA, 2011). As for the theoretical-methodological basis, this research is based on the theoretical framework of Usage Based Functional Linguistics and on Functional-Typological Linguistics. We seek to develop a qualitative analysis, of a descriptive and interpretative nature. In general, we analyze and compare the morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the transitive-causative, medium and passive sentences in PB and Mundurukú. We also analyzed the semantic roles of the arguments in these sentences, in order to verify similarities and/or differences in the transitive-causative, medium and passive sentences in PB and Mundurukú.
