SUMMARY:

In this paper, we examine constructions with the verb to be in the lexical-grammar continuum. So far, much of the available material and research already undertaken and consulted emphasizes, above all, the analysis of the grammaticalisation process of this verb and classifies it from one point. merely morphosyntactic, as the most general representative of the connecting verbs or as an auxiliary verb, semantically faded and of procedural value. However, occurrences of this verb reveal a process of variation in its uses. In this sense, we seek to analyze constructive patterns instantiated by this verb today, considering its semantic multiplicity as well as cognitive and interactional aspects involved in them. The proposed analysis has a qualitative and quantitative nature and is based on Usage-based Functional Linguistics, that combines the American functionalist tradition, represented by researchers such as Talmy Givón, Paul Hopper, Joan Bybee, Elizabeth Closs-Traugott, and Cognitive Linguistics. in particular, the current linked to the Construction Grammar, as postulated by Adele Goldberg, William Croft, Jan-Olla Östman, among others. The data come from actual texts taken from Corpus Discurso & Gramática (Corpus D&G), in its written form, from the Banco Conversacional de Natal (BCN) and from songs collected on the Internet. Partial results indicate that the constructive patterns of the verb to be show a slip that goes, in a continuum, from full verb to procedural verb, with occurrences in (micro) constructions of partially specified and flexible to the most idiosyncratic. In this sense, the relevance of the interface between formal and functional aspects in the analysis of linguistic uses is ratified.
