SUMMARY:

In this research, we investigated a composite predicate construction (CP) [(SN) dar uma v-da (SP)] in Brazilian Portuguese, based on the Usage-Based Functional Linguistics (FURTADO DA CUNHA; BISPO; SILVA, 2013; OLIVEIRA; ROSÁRIO, 2015). That CP construction is formed by the light verb “dar” (“to give”), associated with an indefinite noun phrase (NP) that stems from the derivational process of suffixation (-da) (dar uma caminhadato give a walk, for instance). Hence, dar + uma v-da serves the role of the head of the NP nucleus, since it brings with it information about the eventuality of the verb from which it is derived, through the conservation of the lexical morpheme (BASÍLIO, 2001; SCHER, 2005). The partial results point out that this CP construction has an aspectual meaning. The predicated eventualities are bounded: process with activities and result or final state (change of state) with accomplishments and achievements. In general, occurrences of dar uma v-da do not seem to imply that the eventuality is completed. However, semantic effects vary according to the aspectual type of the constructs: (a) duration bounded of eventuality, which presents an arbitrary end point (atelic events); (b) brevity or temporality of the resulting final state (punctual events); (c) detelicization of eventuality, seen as finished, but not complete (gradation on change of state); and (d) eventuality completed, either done quickly or superficially. Thus, we argue that there is a “family” of constructions with dar uma v-da: agentive micro-constructions (aspectual heterogeneous) and causative micro-constructions, which indicate a gradual change of state and inchoativeness.
