THE MEANING CONSTRUCTION IN MEMES ON “POLICY”: Frame-based analysis
Frames. Moral Frames. Meaning construction. Ecological cognitive linguistics.
This PhD thesis is based on one of the most prominent discursive categories of social networks, the meme. Knowing that meme represents a large number of typical internet phenomena, The meme type focus of this analysis is that constituted for verbal and nonverbal elements, more precisely memes that deal with - what users mean by - “politics” on the social network Facebook. The starting point for this work is that this discursive category, massively present in the life of Brazilians, presents elaborate resources for the construction of meaning, which will be investigated from the analysis of frames triggered by the meme comprehenders. Therefore, in addition to memes, comments on memes will also be taken into account exactly to see what resources have been used to construct meaning. In order to develop this analysis, will be considered the theoretical contribution of the Cognitive Linguistics, more precisely in the Ecological conception of language and cognition, according to which the interaction of the organism with the ecosystem is the starting point for the cognition (DUQUE, 2015b; 2016; 2017; 2018). In this view, it is in social interaction that the linguistic construction of meaning starting. From a methodological point of view, two Facebook pages were selected, one called “rightwing” and one “leftwing” - for witch the users -, according to the criterion of most relevance to users (most likes). Having made this selection, the features for meaning making, the types of frames evoked, are compared between the two political perspectives cited. With this work, expected to contribute to studies that consider cognition as a result of mind-body-ecosystem interaction, as well as to frame-based analysis of meaning-making processes in memes.
