RESUMO:

The present work is inserted in the theme of cultural transfers between France and
Brazil in the nineteenth century. More specifically, it constitutes a study on the
reception of Madame de Staël in Machado de Assis whose nucleus is the problem of
Staël's presence in the Machadian writings. Reflecting on the Machado readings and the
appropriation of ideas, the research will examine the circulation of works of the Franco-
Swiss author in the intellectual environment Carioca, emphasizing the context of
production of Machado de Assis, using the analysis of mentions to Staël in Intellectual
environment, advertisements for the sale of works in the newspaper Cariocas,
catalogues of booksellers of the time – highlighting the role of L. B. Garnier – The
Library of Machado de Assis and other sources. The author we refer to is often
mentioned in the Machadian writings. Observing this, we will seek to go through these
writings, whose dialogue with Staël appears in various phases of his life and production,
in order to accompany the reading of Machado at these different moments and the focus
given by him to the character and constitution of Image of the woman of her time. For
this, we take into consideration the reading of the novel Corina or Italy, by Madame de
Staël, a work that has been circulating in Rio de Janeiro since the first decades of the
nineteenth century and mentioned, among other writings, in the novel Esau and Jacob,
by Machado de Assis. As a theoretical-methodological guideline, we will be based on
the concept of cultural transference (ESPAGNE, 2017), a concept that relativizes the
traditional reflection of historiography in the face of intertextual relations and cultural
exchanges. Focusing on the circularity of cultural objects and paying attention to the
historical pathways, pathways and paths, this method allows the broadening of our field
of vision for a transnational movement within a cultural space, also national. Using as a
basis this theoretical concept and method, from Michel Espagne, we will also guide us
in the studies of the thematic project “Circulação Transatlântica dos Impressos: a
globalização da cultura no século XIX (1789-1914)” under the coordination of Jean-
Yves Mollier (Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-em-Yvelines) and Márcia Abreu
(Universidade Estadual de Campinas).
