The application of the analytical category Discourse Plans in argumentative texts evidences the necessity of abandoning this binary perspective and investigating the phenomenon according to a continuum. In this sense, this dissertation investigates how this category is structured in articles of opinion and what is the relevance of this structure for the textual-discourse, pragmatic and cognitive domains of comprehension of the text in light of the functional perspective. For this, it is based on what Hopper (1979) and Hopper and Thompson (1980) propose for Discourse Plans as well as Haido's (1996) propositions for the treatment of the figure/background dimensions, besides the assumptions of Perelman and Obbrechts-Tyteca (2005) on argumentation, and also on the notions of Discourse Topics borrowed from Textual Linguistics, contained in Jubran (2006a, 2006b, 1992) and Pinheiro (2006). We also work with the notion of Metaphor Situated proposed by Vereza (2013) to account for the cognitive domain. The corpus analyzed here consists of twenty articles of opinion published in the periodicals Carta Capital and Veja in the first semester of 2018. In the quantitative perspective of this study, there were, in absolute terms, 499 occurrences of portions in the background and 84 occurrences in figure, corresponding in percentage terms, respectively, to 85.60% and 14.40% and corroborates the initial hypothesis that there is, in a text, more background than figure. The qualitative results show that the distribution of the funds in the texts is not uniform and the request of a certain type of background for a text is based on its specificity, so that there was no occurrence in the corpus of the Redundancy background. Pragmatically, it has been observed that the integration of certain types of background to the figure obeys a deliberate intention, that is, the integration of the backgrounds is motivated by the need to convey information directly and objectively. The Situated Metaphors, in turn, constitute a tool for argumentation and can occur in any backgrounds, in addition to the figure or title, and the conduction of the metaphorical niche is initiated since its title.
