RESUMO:
This dissertation aims to analyze how the novel The Hunger Games, written by the American yound adults novelist Suzanne Collins (1962-), highlights the relationship between literature and society. Taking in consideration that dystopias are negative representations of the world (SUVIN, 2017) and that its main purpose is to criticize the social model of its time (BOOKER, 1994),  how the narrative uses common elements within the dystopian gender to question Western society in the 21st century is tried to be understood. The research consists in four chapters: 1. From the understanding of the utopian tradition, and through the creation of dystopias and its phases, dystopian literature is defined as an example works of social criticism (BOOKER, 1994); 2. Understand the historical context of the 21st century taking the attacks of September 11, 2001 as the crucial poin; 3. Analyze which thematic structures (REIS, 2005) are brought in The Hunger Games; 4. Finally, discuss how the themes of the work relate to the context of the twenty-first century. Based on the above reflections, it is understood that the work questions ideological structures present in contemporary society.
