RESUMO:

In this thesis, we aim to analyse the course of the intimate narrative in the novel production of Lúcio Cardoso. To outline that, we have selected Salgueiro (1935) and Crônica da casa assassinada (1959), which are the two novels we consider as the beginning and the pinnacle of his intimate narrative style. In order to develop this analysis, we have been using as a method the dialectical conception between literature and its production context, establishing a relation between social and formal aesthetic elements, which are the principles of integrative criticism proposed by Antonio Candido (2010b). Initially, we present an overview of Lúcio Cardoso’s life and work, as well as a contextualization about the 1930 novel, showing both regional and intimate/psychological aspects from the perspective of the literary critics Luís Bueno (2006), Afrânio Coutinho (2004), Antonio Candido (1989), Wilson Martins (2004), Alfredo Bosi (2006), MassaudMoisés (2004) and Luciana StegagnoPicchio (2004). After that, with regards to the Salgueiro analysis, we use the perspective of Luís Bueno (2006), Lúcia Miguel Pereira (1935), Afrânio Coutinho (1995; 2004a), and Rosiane Vieira de Rezende (2007); as well as Antonio Candido (2010a) and Paulo Franchetti (2012) when the comparison between Salgueiro and O Cortiço, by Aluísio Azevedo, is established. In respect to the analysis of Crônica da casa assassinada, which is still under construction, it will be used the concepts of dialogism and social languages by Mikhail Bakhtin (2015b), and will look into the presence of polyphony among the voices in the novel. We will also use in the analysis of latter novel the notion of implied author by Wayne Booth (1980) and the contextualization of Gilberto Freyre (2004) on the decline of the Brazilian’s rural patriarchy. Finally, the link between the analysis of Salgueiro and Crônica da casa assassinada will occur through the structural category of the narrator. WhileSalgueirois narrated in the third person with the use of omniscience, Crônica da casa assassinadais narrated by several voices in the first person, which is one of the aesthetical aspects of the psychological novel. Thus, we will seek to present how this change of structural element contributed to consolidate the intimate style of Lúcio Cardoso through the conceptions of point of view by Norman Friedman (2002); the notion of polymodality proposed by Gérard Genette (1979); the perspective of social plurilingualismdeveloped by Mikhail Bakhtin (2015a); and Theodor Adorno's (2003) considerations on the subjectivism shown in the narrative voice of twentieth-century novels.
