RESUMO:

The present research aims to investigate in the epistolary novel The Color Purple(1982) by the American author Alice Walker (1944 -), the various instances that build, throughout the work, the main character and narrator, Celie. To achieve this goal, we will follow a path that goes from the analysis of linguistic aspects (BAKHTIN, 2016), going through the theories of meaning and psychology of colors presented by Heller and Gage, especially the purple present in the title, as well as theories about the cultural identity according to Hall and Bhabha. Using the intersectionality of Collins as an analytical tool, we will have as main focus, to outline how the path that will consolidate the character as a black woman in post-slavery North American society in which she lives and how her walk towards the feeling of recognition and belonging to such gender and race. As a theoretical basis for the reflection on feminism, we will have the thought of Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf, fundamental for understanding classic ideas about feminism; Michelle Perrot, Judith Butler, Rebecca Solnit and Virginie Despentes adding a more contemporary point of view to the issue of women in the society nowadays and also the black feminism of Audre Lorde, Angela Davis, bell hooks, Chimamanda Adichie and Alice Walker herself who much contributed in her non-fictional essays for the understanding of the work analyzed here.
